Chapter 10: Miscellaneous Features

Backup/Restore Database

Your application information is important to your practice. Multi-User operation increases the possibility of corrupted data due to increased chances of computer crashes and network communication problems.  It is our recommendation that the database be backed up every day. You should back up the data and keep it away and safe from the install location. You could use any media to back up the data:

      Memory Key

      CD-R/W

      Zip drive

      Tape drive

      Another computer on your network

It is best to choose a backup schedule that corresponds to the amount of data you can afford to lose. For example, if you cannot afford to lose more than a day's worth of data, back up on a daily basis. If you can afford to lose a week's worth of data, back up weekly, and so on. Insight Software, LLC. cannot be held responsible for lost or corrupted data.

When working with backups:

Maintain backups in a secure place, preferably at a site different from the site where the data resides.

Keep older backups for a designated amount of time in case the most recent backup is damaged, destroyed, or lost.

Label backup media to prevent overwriting critical backups. This allows for easy identification of the data stored on the backup media or the specific backup set.

Backup

My Vision Express will automatically remind you to perform backup in the number of days you specify when you manually perform a backup. It is recommended that you perform backup on daily basis.

      To perform backup operation:

1.  Follow the menu item sequence … Tools | Backup Database.

2.  Backup Database Screen will prompt you to select how frequently you would like to be reminded to perform your backup operation. Also, it will display the date of the last backup.

3.  If you click OK, you will be prompted to select the folder where you would like the backup saved to.  The name of the file will be defaulted to the current date but can be changed if desired.  Once you have selected the folder and file name click the Save Button and the backup will be saved in the location specified.

4.  If you would like to save it to another device this can now be done in the routine way which you save to that device.

Restore

Restore operation will restore your data to the day you performed backup of the file you are restoring from. Any data entered after that day will be lost.

It is recommended to perform a backup before performing the restore operation in order to recover from mistakes. It is also recommended that Restore option is secured and available to users of Administrator role only. To disable for other user types change the security settings under File | Setup | Company Information | Security option.

      To perform restore operation:

3.  Follow the menu item sequence Tools | Restore Database.

4.  In the Restore Database Screen, all the backup sets are displayed. Select the appropriate backup set from which to restore by checking the Restore Field and click OK.

5.  You can also perform restore operation from database file of another server.  This is useful when you want to view data from one server in another server install or want to switch the server computer. To copy data from or to another server click Detach & Attach Button and follow the Onscreen Instructions.

6.  You can also choose to restore a database from another file that is not displayed by clicking on the File Button and selecting the backup file from which to perform restore.
